Thank You: K&N Wrench-Off Oil Filters

It’s happened to all of us before, right? You’re underneath your car, changing the oil, when the filter gets stuck — and now you’ve got no easy way to get it off other than jamming a screwdriver in the side and making a huge mess. Or better yet, you’ve got a filter wrench but no room, or one of those filter socket deals, but it’s stripped out. K&N, famous for their air filters, is making a dent in the oil filter market with the new Wrench-Off line of filters. It’ll filter out more particles than your standard filter, as is the way with K&N, and it also features a nut at the end of it, so you can remove the filter with a simple 1″ or 17mm wrench or socket.

Such a simple idea — why did it take so long to get out there?

Ugh. I spent an hour last night getting one of these off of a friends Alfa Spider. The nut has very rounded edges from the paint, so it tends to round off easily. We managed to destroy the nut and had to resort to a strap wrench to get it off.

On the other hand, any maintenance on the Alfa is taking your life in your own hands, so it will probably work fine on the vast majority of cars. Just don’t over tighten the thing.
