Ford Transit Connect, Coming To North America
By Calvin Lewis
Finally, after years of waiting, Ford has decided to bring a Ford of Europe vehicle to the US market. No, it’s not the Mondeo or the Focus, but the Ford Transit Van — not the most exciting vehicle, but it’s a start. Ford has been producing the Transit in Europe for just over 40 years now, and it’s highly respected by businesses large and small.
Ford has dubbed this simple yet durable model the Ford Transit Connect. Its 2.0 liter, four cylinder engine will propel it along to the tune of an estimated 19 mpg in the city, 24 highway. It won’t make as much power as the engines in the E-Series van, but it doesn’t weigh 4,773 lbs either. And unlike the competition from Dodge and Chevrolet, the Transit Connect is guaranteed to handle like a car as a result of the chassis it shares with the Focus.
So keep an eye out in mid-2009 for a taste of how the engineers at Ford of Europe design vehicles — they make ‘em more fuel conscious, but still able to haul everything you or your business or family needs moved. It seems there may be hope for Ford after all, and it starts with the Transit Connect.
