Mazda Puts The 2 On A Diet

Is lighter better? Well, Mazda thinks so — the new Mazda 2 weighs around 2,100 pounds, 220 lbs. less than the Toyota Yaris.

Mazda chose a light, high-strength steel for the metal that makes up 40% of the car. They simplified the wiring system, which, as Johnny Smith points out on Fifth Gear, eliminates 6.4 pounds. Even the magnetic speakers are made from neodymium for a savings of 2.2 pounds. By putting such components on a diet, Mazda improves fuel economy, acceleration, and handling.

Europeans can enjoy the lightweight Mazda 2, with its typical subcompact features — but unfortunately, the Mazda 2 won’t be heading towards our shores anytime soon. Still, we think it’s a prime example of how cars and trucks should be developed — keeping weight at the top of the list.

I liken it to the quote (sadly I forget who it was who said it) - I believe it was related to an aircraft designer.

“It is done not when there is no more to add, but when there is no more to take away.”
