At the 77th Geneva International Motor Show in March 2007, Subaru unveiled plans for a boxer engine using diesel rather than gasoline fuel. Unfortunately, it’ll only be sold in Europe, where diesel-powered vehicles account for 40-45% of vehicles sales and where, consequently, average fuel consumption is about 40 mpg.

But don’t give up hope — according to Internet buzz, US buyers might be able to buy a future Forester, Outback, or Legacy powered by a 2.0-2.2L, four cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine.
