The Smart Fortwo will come to the States this year, in stand-alone stores and at Mercedes dealerships. I’ve driven one, and I like it. Though it may not look cool at first, the build quality and materials rank among the best in the small car segment.

With all the basic safety features, but few comforts, the Pure starts out at under $12,000. I prefer the Passion Coupe with the Comfort Package — it features leather/heated seats, power steering, rain and light sensors, and automatic headlights, for under $14,500. The Passion Cabrio, at under $17,000, adds a nice soft top to all the features of the Coupe.

All three models come standard with four airbags, crumple zones, seat-belt tensioners, ABS, and ESP (electronic stability program). One downside: the 1.0 liter, three cylinder engine requires premium fuel. But overall the Smart Fortwo’s good points outweigh the bad — for what you get, it’s worth checking out.
