Get A Lift, Lift Your Spirits
By Rick Reimundez
Every hobbyist customizer that I’ve ever met (who didn’t already have one) wishes for a lift of their very own. But to get one you used to have to buy from no-name distributors in the back of magazines. Now even the big aftermarket players are into the lift market: Summit Racing now offers their own private-label four-post lift — at a rather reasonable $5000.
Summit’s lift package includes a jack platform that rolls from front to back so you can lift the vehicle off the lift’s tire platforms and a drip pan to keep your shop clean. The lifts feature a 7,000 pound capacity and are powdercoated (in blue) for durability.
The included 110v power unit can lift the deck in 55 seconds with or without a car on it. And you don’t need to run 220V to the lift, either. Since it’s freestanding, you don’t need to worry about having any crap installed under your floor — just a few lag bolts to anchor the posts down.
If you just need to get under your car to work on it you can get away with an eight foot ceiling. But if you’re lucky enough to have a ten or twelve foot ceiling, you can actually stack cars one on top of the other. If you have the space for it, you can lift the chassis as much as seven feet off the ground!
The lift offers ten lock positions via cutouts on the heavy duty 4″ square structural steel tubing, so no matter where you stop it you’ll have the locks and the firm base to keep the load from making a pancake out of you. Dimensions are 15′ long x 9′ 2-1/2″ wide x 7′ 5-1/8″ tall (outside the posts), with a 7′ 8-1/2″ width inside the posts.
The lifts ship direct from the manufacturer and arrives ready to assemble with basic hand tools. They also all ship with a five year warranty. If you’re not in the lower 48 states however, you’re boned as they can only deliver in the continental US. The truck freight charges are included in the package price.

Looks like prices have come down a lot in the past 10 years. The last time I priced them in ‘96, $5k would buy you a floor mounted 2 post lift.
Here’s another 4 post, 7000 lb lift for only about $2k. http://www.equiptool.com/product_info.php?cPath=15_55&products_id=480
