Yokohama Dreamin’
By Sean O'Hara
Yokohama’s Advan A048 tires aren’t really meant for the street, but I want them anyway. When you really stop and think about it, this isn’t the kind of gear have to need to appreciate, anyway. They’re basically track with just enough “tread” — and we use that word loosely — on them to snag a DOT approval fot street use.
The entire tread surface on the Advan’s is one continuous tread block called (wait for it) “single block,” which increases stiffness, enhances cornering, and optimizes power transitions during acceleration and braking. The sweet-looking tread pattern was developed for racing applications, and Yokohama says it helps the tires to quickly and easily transition from straight-line sprints to high-speed cornering, enabling predictable handling. (In English: It helps with traction.)
The Advans run about $200 per, but they are cool-looking — and I want the car they were meant to go on more than just the tires themselves. In short, having a ride that needs track tires means you’re probably at the at the track using them. Sweet.
