BD Power’s Turbo Timer For Your Diesel Truck
By Rick Reimundez
Shutting down a hot turbocharged engine is bad news. But with BD Power’s cool down timers — designed specifically for high performance or heavy duty diesel truck applications — you don’t have to sweat coking and cracking. After you turn off your ignition, these timers keep your engine running until oil temp reaches a pre-set temperature, keeping the life-giving oil flowing through the turbos to cool them down slowly and safely.
They’ll increase the life of your turbo chargers significantly, and your wallet will thank you since you won’t have to pony up for expensive replacement turbos. It basically works with any K-Type thermocouple (which you’ll need to buy separately if you don’t already have one) and it measures EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperatures). When you turn off the key, if the EGT is above that threshold it will keep the engine running until the EGT drops down.
They’re pretty slick actually, and many guys that have modified their turbo diesel Duramax, Cummins, or Powerstroke will already will have an EGT hooked up to a gauge or a tuning module. If not, a thermocouple will run you about $80.
The timer itself checks in at around $135, you can sometimes score ‘em cheaper. (Check out the Google Products link.) The kit includes everything you need including detailed instructions. If you’re a Dodge guy, make sure you get the kit for your truck as it includes some extra parts specific to your application.
